Introduction to Drawing

1-Week Introduction to Drawing Workshop Description

This five-day, one-hour daily workshop is designed to introduce students to drawing fundamentals in an accelerated setting. Students will learn to identify various line types (the building blocks of all drawings) and practice improving their motor skills to produce these lines. Next, students will learn to decompose complex images into simple shapes, then refine them to accurately recreate the outline of a subject. A lesson in values, light, and shadows will help the student learn to render the drawing into a more three-dimensional representation of the subject. All ages are welcome (very young students may benefit by parental assistance during class).

Materials List:
Regular paper (8.5” x 11”), regular pencil, white vinyl or hi-polymer eraser, triangle ruler, ruler and/or other straight edge, painter’s or masking tape, scissors, blending stump or Q-tips. Optional but recommended: Charcoal pencil set that includes 1 hard, 1 medium, and 1 soft charcoal pencil and kneaded eraser.

Sofia S. Kang

Instructor Bio

I have been teaching the Bargue Drawing Course for one year and have received instruction in oil painting under the guidance of Ed Salazar and Chris Kolupski. I have my own studio where I’ve been working on commissions in oil, and to explore and play, which is what art is about. I love going to art museums where my preference is in post-impressionist art and the Italian Renaissance, among others. It is a pleasure to help you on your artistic journey and share with you the passion for art, a gift from God.

Instructor

Lindy Maio

Instructor Bio

Lindy is a graphic designer with over 25 years experience. In recent years she has switched her focus to fine arts. Charcoal, acrylic, oil, and digital painting are her specialties. She has been teaching the Bargue drawing course, Young Artists course, and the one-week Introduction to Drawing Workshop since the Ode2Art Academy (formerly New World School of Art) opened. She firmly believes that what makes an artist is training and practice, not just genes. Taking the mystery out of accurate drawing by teaching proven techniques in foundational drawing skills in the Workshop is a passion of hers. Many who never thought they could draw are amazed how much they improve in one week. Even those with years of experience have felt the course fills in gaps in their knowledge that help take their drawings to the next level. Lindy is described by her students as an encouraging, patient, and kind instructor. Her joy comes from seeing her student’s success!

Instructor

Gabriele Bentley

Instructor Bio

Gabriele Bentley has always loved art. Growing up in a small mountain town, she was privileged to be raised by parents who nursed her inborn love of the natural world, and it’s designer. Based on her artwork as a young person, she earned a Scholarship to the Savana Collage of Art and Design, a full scholarship to an other school of her choice and an offer of private patronage with no apparent limitations, among other opportunities. She did not pursue art in that way, however, and enjoyed drafting for her father (a skilled architect, and many say, artist) and further exploring the world through volunteer work.

Gabriele is enthusiastic about many forms of art, but is especially drawn to art that highlights the beauty and scientific complexity of nature, encourages the observer to see the world or something in it in a new way, expresses an undeniable truth or evokes powerful emotions. Gabriele, who has a B.A. in education, loves teaching all subjects and has taught in several venues including private tutoring and lessons, homeschool for her own children and other families and a charter Montessori school. She is grateful for the opportunity to study and teach at Ode to Art Academy. She loves working with all ages and skill levels and is exited to start a new learning journey with you.
